We're here!!
I'm a wee bit tired so this will have no Flair to it!
Yesterday was our day of departure and at a fun 6:15am our car was not at our house to pick us up. I tracked the car online and it said that our "order" had been fulfilled....except that we were still home! I called and was put on hold for a few minutes until the lady returned to tell me that the car was ordered. I told her if it wasn't there in 5 minutes we were jumping in our car and driving but luckily he showed up about 4 minutes later. We made it though LAX with the only snafu being that they would not assign Evan a seat from Atlanta to Bogota and said we had to do it at the gate in Atlanta during our quick 57 minute layover in the REALLY far international terminal. Our plane was on the ground2 hours early so one would think it would be on time departing especially since everyone was boarded with 10 to spare...au contraire! Our plane sat and sat and sat until we left about 30 minutes late-ish. We followed the flight map closely while checking the flight on Delta to see if we were going to make up any of the time but it wasn't happening - why couldn't we have a monster tailwind? Evan asked the stewardess if they could call ahead and tell them we were coming but that we would be cutting it close. She wasn't very helpful other than to let us know our terminal to the international one was about 15 minutes via foot / tram. PANIC! If we missed our flight to Bogota, we were so screwed since our meeting was Monday morning at 11. We found Tara (YAY Tara!) who we texted via the iPad and had her call the airline as well as the Atlanta airport and try to inform them we were coming to the gate late. They weren't very helpful except to tell her that there were seats open for Evan to be assigned a seat - comforting (sarcasm). After talking with Tara we decided Evan would ran to the gate and I would ask the person at the gate to call our gate and tell them that we were on our way. As soon as the plane stopped, we grabbed our carry-ons and pushed our way through 1st class which we were luckily the row behind so we were the first ones off the plane. Evan started running and I went to the gate worker dude who proceeded to say "no" when I asked if he could call our gate followed by "they won't hold the plane for you anyways" as I started running. AWESOME! I don't know that I have ever been in a longer terminal and I had to stop running half way to the tram after dodging people, dropping my suitcase and running like Forrest. We ended up making the same tram and I jumped in at the last second while the doors were closing on my bad shoulder....yeah, don't forget I'm doing all of this with a bum right shoulder. We thought by the map that it looked like the gate was right outside of the tram.....hahahahahaha....no. We were running through the food court for what felt like a mile and I gave up half way again. When I made it to our gate Evan was at the counter getting a seat and then, THEN I heard the lady over the speaker say the plane had just deplaned, they were cleaning it and they would start boarding in 20-25 minutes? Wait, what!? At no time did our stewardess or the Delta person Tara spoke to decide to fill us in on the late flight departing Atlanta? Also, the Delta site we continually checked said the flight was on time. Really guys!? So not cool. The flight to Bogota started getting painful with about 2 hours to go since it was our 2nd long flight and Evan is 6'3" and kind of annoying when he flies ;) We landed and made it to customs even though the airport has no signs in English - eeeeek. Since we were in the very back of the plane it took a little while to get through customs but it was easy and smooth once we got there. By the time we got though, our baggage claim carousel was stopped and all the luggage had been cleared so we started looking at the bags laying around the desk of the baggage workers. Hmmmmmm, no, not these....or these...or these. Uh, Houston, we have a problem. Our luggage did not make it onto the plane in Atlanta. They found it in the system and said it would come on the same flight the next day. The 2 bags we checked we're for Evan and then the girls so Evan literally had nothing - no clothes, toiletries, etc. we found our driver and he took us to the supermarket so Evan could get toothpaste / brush and other things he needed to get through 1 day without his belongings. The first thing we noticed real quick like when we got in our apartment was that it was freezing so I started looking around for a thermostat to no avail. Nope...no thermostat. Say what? Everything in the apartment is concrete so the cold is extra cold and we were totally I'll prepared for this. Evan stripped and washed all his clothes since he had to wear them again in the morning and sat around in a towel and a blanket while I went to bed.
This morning we woke up and our maid Milena was here asking what we wanted her to make for breakfast. She is awesome and will be here for us Mon - Sat to cook, clean grocery shop and anything else apartment related we need.
Our main contact in Bogota Martha and our driver for our time here Mauricio picked us up at 9:45. I couldnt even begin to tell you how cool those two are! :) At 11 we had our appointment at ICBF where we talked with the girls' social worker, psychologist and defender about everything and went over their files. After we were done the girls came in with stuffed animals for us, a photo album they made for us and sweet bread that Leidy made for us as well. They are SO ridiculously cute! We spent a few minutes alone with them and then we went to a mall to eat lunch with Martha, Mauricio and Johana (social worker). It was basic - the girls had hamburgers and everyone else has either grilled or fried chicken. The food in Colombia is a bit bland and they don't use a lot of spice in their foods. After eating we went to a different office of ICBF which is their social services. The woman interviewed the girls and then wrote a letter that stated the girls knew what adoption meant and that they want to be adopted by us and see themselves as our children. This letter will apparently help speed up the process once we get in front of a judge later down the line.
After ICBF we went to the supermarket and I think we were there for 1 1/2 hours, maybe even more! This place is ginormous and has food, housewares, clothes, banks, cellular services, etc, etc.....we got enough food to completely fill the fridge to the point where you can hardly see the light inside. Ha!
The bread here is SOOOO good and I can tell the main ingredient is a straight heart attack but whatever. It has so much butter that you don't need to put any on it - yummmmmm! I made pasta for dinner and Leidy gobbled hers up but Talia was so tired that she fell asleep. After dinner Mauricio brought us a heater....YESSSsSs and then took Evan and Leidy to the airport to get the 2 suitcases. Everyone is in bed now and I am doing the same in about.....3....2....1
:)

I have learned that if my layover is an hour or less, I may make the connection, but my luggage never will.
